The BPE Lives

Dear Most Loyal Denizens of A Ride on the Chuck Wagon:

Rumors of my untimely demise are premature. The BPE lives.

The BPE had to go to the mattresses for a few weeks surrounding the Notre Dame coaching search. In the end, we got our man. The one. The only. The impenetrably awesome Brian Kelly. Bob Stoops was practically begging Jack Swarbrick for the job, and Jack told him to get lost because we had Brian Kelly IN THE BAG. Like Barzini, it was Kelly all along.

Brian Kelly now follows the BPE on Twitter (ndeconprof) and you should too.

Back to the salt mines, you good folk. Peace and hair grease to you and yours this holiday season.

The BPE. Out.

Pick of the Day

There will be no pick of the day. I do not know when it will return. I apologize to my fans and ask for your understanding. It is just not in me today and I don't know when it will return.

Pick of the Day

Dinosaurs +7 @ Miami
Basis: Toronto is playing better with Jarret Jack in the starting line up and Jose Calderon on the bench with an injury. Toronto's inside game will be an advantage and considering Miami's struggling as of late, I like Toronto to possibly even pull this one out. I will not be able to watch because I will be in Church watching us take on the Pistons. Feeling pretty good about this pick- take the Raptors and thank me later.
Tuesday Night Update: Not only did I fail you, I failed myself. I am sorry. Didn't see a second- too busy watching the Rockets Dominate. I will pick a winner tomorrow- I GUARANTEE IT.

Pick of the Day

TWolves +13.5 @ Mormons
Basis: I struggled long and hard with this pick. In the end, I had to go with my theory of taking double digit underdoggs. There were a few other games that I certainly liked tonight, highlighted by the Wizards getting 2 points at the Clippers. But, I believe in my strategy and I believe in my knowledge. I like Kevin Love to play big tonight. The thing that scares me about this game is the fact that Minnesota actually beat Utah straight up 9 days ago- so, I hope that revenge isn't on the Jazz mind. I am sticking to my guns- take the double digit doggs. I am also going to start keeping track of my theory and test some other theories that I have regarding NBA gambling. Let's Go Wolves.
Monday Night Update: Minnesota gets it down with the outright W. I didn't watch all of it due to my other NBA interests. I was getting a look at the Nuggets since the Rockets have to travel to Denver on Wednesday. All three double digit doggs covered tonight. I am very curious to see how this works out. I love the big doggs in the NBA. I am really starting to feel comfortable again picking NBA games. Stay tuned for tomorrow's pick.

Pick of the Day

Spurs -5.5 @ The Clips

Sunday Night Update: This game was never really in doubt. SA got up early and although LAC did make a few runs and close the gap, they never really challenged. I am feeling really confident that this is going to be a good week. I know I have struggled recently, but stay with me. I am going to turn this thing around.

Pick of the Day Record: 12-11-1

Pick of the Day

I am taking a day off. Tomorrow may be a day off as well as I will be in attendance at the Rockets game vs. Cleveland. Look for a new pick on Thursday and I guarantee a winner.

Pick of the Day

San Antonio +2 @ Utah

Basis: San Antonio has to win a game. They've lost two in a row and Duncan is mad. Look for Manu to finally play like a man tonight and have a big game. The Spurs win this game outright, but the moneyline does not pay enough for you to pick it. Just take the points and you'll be thanking me later.

Monday Update: San Antonio blew it by losing the 3rd quarter by 18 points. Then they blow it down the stretch. I can't win for the life of me. Jazz win by 3. Sorry people. DON'T LOSE FAITH IN THE DOS. I will rebound.

Pick of the Day Record: 11-11-1

The Life of Dos Continued.......

It has been a crazy couple weeks of sports my friends. My head is still spinning. Let's recap:

- Notre Dame can't get a hire because no one wants that job

- Bobby Bowden announces retirement from the Florida State University

- Urban Cryer is treated for dehydration at a local Gainesville Hospital following the loss to Alabama

- God's gift to football, Timmy Teabag, cried like a little girl after losing the SEC Championship to Alabama (although I will give him credit for saying that they simply got beat by a better team)

- The Rockets go 3-1 on their recent roadtrip with the one loss coming in controvercial fasion in Portland last night.

- Jimbo Fisher is building a serious staff at Florida State

- ESPN Classic realized that College Football just lost a legend and did the right thing and ran a 24 hour Bobby Bowden Special

- Did I mention that Notre Dame can't hire a coach?

It is unbelievable to me how this whole thing has worked out. For those that don't know, my brother, THE BPE, is a professor at Notre Dame. My brother, THE BPE, USED to be a reliable poster on the Chuck Wagon. My brother, THE BPE, is shit out of luck at this point. My bother, THE BPE, is delusional if he thinks he is going to make a "splash" coaching hire. No coach from a big time program would go to Notre Dame. Any BCS conference job is better than the job that presents itself in South Bend. It really is. A Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, or Jim Harbough would be simply foolish to go to Notre Dame. It is a lose-lose situation. Let's take Stoops situation for example: you have a job that pays you very handsomly. Yes, your expectations are high and you've stuggled this year, but you have the 2nd youngest team in the Big XII conference and your fanbase at Notre Dame would create unatainable expectations compared to OU's fanbase. You play in a top 5 college football rivalry every year in Dallas. You are God in Norman, Oklahoma. If for some reason you went to Notre Dame and you didn't play in a BCS bowl in 3 years, you wouldn't be employed. You would be searching for a coordinator position at a big school, rather than a head coach position. Yes, you would be very well compensated for your failure, but being compensated isn't worth leaving a perfect situation. Notre Dame needs to readjust their thinking here. It's not a top 10 job in College Football. It really isn't. Yes, there is serious history. Yes, there is the stigma that is Notre Dame. But, in actuality, Notre Dame hasn't been relevent in 15 years. The last piece of relevent Notre Dame History is beating Florida State in 1993 in the "Game of the Century". Florida State returned the favor in 2003 by shutting the Irish out in South Bend 37-0 by the way. Notre Dame has simply lost its luster. And please believe me, I am in the camp that thinks that College Football isn't the same without a powerful Notre Dame Team. I am the guy who believed that College Football wasn't the same when Alabama was down- and thankfully they are now back. We need Notre Dame to be good. We need Notre Dame to be relevent. But, their only option is to hire Brian Kelly. And, if Notre Dame has the audacity to make this "unpopular" hire, it gives them the chance to save their program. You have to hire someone who is hungry. You have to hire someone who feels like they have something to prove. You have to hire a "mikey-mouse" coach if you want to win. You have to take a chance. Who knows, Brian Kelly, as the Notre Dame coach, may fall flat on his face, but he is the only viable option. My brother is a believer that you can't have a coach that hasn't won at a "big" school be sucessful- and I beg to differ. Brian Kelly has won everywhere he has been. Two national titles at Grand Valley State. MAC Championship at Central Michigan. Big East Champion at Cincinnati and a date with the Gators in New Orleans. The problem now is that Notre Dame has probably waited too long. Brian Kelly would have walked to South Bend 3 days ago, but now he has the dominant program in the Big East. He can play for a BCS bowl year in and year out. He would be playing for a National Championship had Nebraska not played for field goals last night. You could get Kelly for half the price that you would potentially be paying Meyer or Stoops. That equates to half as much money that you'd be paying them to get the hell out of dodge in 3 years. If I am Notre Dame's Athletic Director, the choice is easy. I would take a chance. Just give it a try. Notre Dame has lost its luster and I think that someone with Brian Kelly's resume would be the perfect fit. I want Notre Dame to be good, I really do. It is important for College Football. It is important to me because I don't want my brother to be miserable. But, I am affraid to say that I think Notre Dame has waited too long. Brian Kelly was the correct hire and I think they thought that they could unrealistically lure Meyer or Stoops away. And now, I don't know where they turn to. In closing to this thought, Go Irish.

Let's now talk about my Seminoles. I said last week that I regretted how I acted towards Bobby Bowden. I said that:

"The world is a funny place, you know? I wanted Coach Bowden to step down, but I never imagined it would hurt this much. It's hard to be happy about it. The man just has so much pride. You cannot fault someone for believing in himself and his skills to get something done, and I failed miserably here by bashing him. I try to live my life without regrets, and for the most part I have succeeded in this- not this time. I try to look at every mistake I make- and believe me, I have made my share- as a learning experience and not as an experience to regret. But, I wholeheartedly regret the negativity that I shared with regards to Coach Bowden. I think it is fair to say that it is time to move forward, but I just wish it had gone down differently. I want what is best for the football program, but losing Coach Bowden is just a shot to the heart. He is the only coach I know. It's a tough day for the Nole Nation. Thanks for everything Coach. You're the best."

This is the coach that I wrote a birthday letter to 3 years ago and had a package in the mail adressed to me less than a week later. Inside the package was a photo of Bobby Bowden with the words "To Scott: Thanks for being a Seminole! -Bobby Bowden". I am tearing up thinking about it. I have a real hard time believing that any coach at a big time football program would do this. Try sending a letter to Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer, and NOT EVEN ASKING FOR A RESPONSE, and see if you get a personalized autograph within a week. It was simply an amazing experience. The loss of Bobby Bowden is truely an end to an era. A tremendous era. When I think College Football, I think Bobby Bowden. Yes, I am biased in this belief, but he is undoubtably on the Mount Rushmore of College Football alongside Bear Bryant and Joe Paterno. He is the only coach I have known my entire lifetime. I ridiculed him. I talked about how he was being selfish sticking around too long. I asked the Lord to make Bobby hang 'em up. And God Damnit I regret it. Bobby Bowden is my idol. He is my hero. If I ever have children- outlook not looking so good since my love of sport is bigger than my love for any woman- I am going to teach them about Bobby Bowden. I am going to tell them to model their life around Bobby Bowden. Yes there has been controversey around his tenure at FSU. Yes he has given second chances. Yes there have been scandels. But, Bobby Bowden has had a positive impact on the world. The players that have had the pleasure of playing for him talk about how he changed their life. It is only fitting that his final game will be against West Virginia- where he left to come to Florida State. People, he changed College Football. 14 consecutive top 5 finishes in the AP Poll. 14 strait 10 win seasons. In 1981 he took Florida State on a 5 week roadtrip to Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Louisiana State, and Nebraska. And he won 3 of the games. This guy built a football dynasty out of nothing but a team that won 4 games in the three years prior to his arrival. Simply amazing. Simply my hero. Simply my idol. Simply accomplishments that will never occur again. I can only hope and pray that he takes a position with Florida State after his year of traveling that he says is coming up. We are better people because of Bobby Bowden.

Jimbo Fisher. Somehow his presence has helped me feel better about the whole situation that has taken place in Tallahassee in the recent weeks. The man carries himself well. He knows what's going on. He never EVER tried to play his hand and force Bowden out. He loves Bobby Bowden. He loves the Bowden Family. He embraces the challenge that lies ahead. He is putting together a staff that is scary good. He is attempting to build a SEC Powerhouse in the ACC. If he can somehow put together something even close to resembling a SEC Powerhouse the world of College Football is in deep trouble. He is relentless. When Bobby announced his retirement last week guess where Jimbo was- on the road recruiting. He has 4 commitments in his first 4 days as "the guy". He has handled this situation with more class and more pride than I could ever imagine. He wants the challenge to follow the Legend. He isn't scared. People are saying that you can never be successful following a legend- saying that Jimbo is dead in the water following Bobby. I am not drinking the Florida State Koolaide here- and I believe it in my bones that Jimbo is the right guy. He is a Saban deciple. He learned under the best. Saban is the best in the buisiness and you're telling me that my new head coach learned under him? I am feeling just fine. He is going to bring in a staff that is competent and wants to win. His staff is going to recruit relentlessly. His staff is going to put our players in positions to be successful- on and off the field.

Although I really do regret how the whole Bobby situation was handled, I am very excited about the future. I was a mess for a few days. It was tough. But, I am very comfortable where our program is heading and Florida State may get a bigger donation from me come spring time. I am so thankful that I purchased season tickets last year when we were hovering above the abyss. Now I have 30 yard line seats for the remainder of my life and these wouldn't be available now. It has also just been announced that Florida State will be playing West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on New Year's day in Jacksonville. Me and my best Nole Friend, Todd, will be in attendance. So thankful that I will be able to be there when Bowden says goodbye. It is going to be a defining moment in my life. It really is. It is an amazing feeling to love something as much and with all you have like I do to Florida State. I know I am not an alumnus, but I consider myself to be a Nole. I will do anything for this University and I am very excited about the direction that the football program is moving in. My email adress while attending Texas AS&M university was warrick@tamu.edu.- in honor of Warrick Dunn and Peter Warrick. And I will be a supporter, both emotionally and financially, until I get put in the ground. The future looks bright my friends. The Future looks bright. And Heather Dinich still has a dick in her mouth 24/7. How she has a job is beyond me.
Let's do a little Rockets Talk now.
The other team that will forever hold a place in my heart. I will take a 3-1 roadtrip anytime. But, the way we lost in Portland last night makes me upset. We have no "superstar" and we are paying the price with the officials. It's not illegal to call a foul on the opposing team when the Rockets are playing. How Aaron Brooks didn't get the call last night is beyond me. I don't understand.
We play so hard. We play as a team. In simpler terms, we do what we have to do to win. We have a line up that any fan would say "Wow, I can't believe that the Rockets are winning so many games." The wins against the Clippers and the Thunder were wins that we must get. We have to get wins against teams that you are "suposed" to beat. Yes, it hurts that we lost to both Texas teams 2 weeks ago, but I still stand behind my belief that we are the best team in the state. I said recently that "it's pretty easy to see, for anyone who is an NBA fan, that the best team in Texas plays its home games at a place called toyota Center that resides on Bell and LeBranch street in Downtown Houston." I still believe this. We have a certain chemistry with our current squad. We play very well with eachother. It is a complete unknown how we will react to the return of Tracy McGrady. It is simply unknown. We don't know if McGrady has played his last game in the red and white. We don't know if Morey is activly shopping Tracy to the whole league like we've been reading from Yahoo Sports. We don't know for certain if Yao is actually beating his original prognosis and could possibly be ready for the playoff push. Imagine this for a second- the Rockets trade TMac, Battier, and Scola to the Toronto Raptors in a sign and trade for Chris Bosh. It's okay to dream people. It is okay to dream. Think about the possibilities. There is no doubt in my mind that Yao Ming will be a Rocket for life. It is going to happen. He is too valuable to our franchise to let go. He is the BEST center in the NBA. With him and Bosh controlling the middle, the Rockets would be tough to defeat. But, of course, this is a pipe dream. We have to work with what we have.
There was a play a few nights ago against the Clippers where Trevor Ariza took it to the rack with authority and dunked over Chris Kaman. It was a beautiful sight to see. He must keep this aggresivness up. We have to have Trevor taking it to the rack and try to kill anything in his way. Trevor is so long and a good enough free throw shooter that we need him to attack the basket and manufacture points from the free throw line. Chase Budinger continues to be a huge suprise to me this year. Everytime he steps on the floor I am reminded on how I wasn't a believer in him when he dominated the summer league. I never thought in a million years that he would be a solid NBA player. But, I have been proved wrong. I am really happy with his development and he really does have a great set of tools, as Bullard would say. I hate Matt Bullard by the way. Chuck has been his usual self- getting after it on the defensive end and actually adding a little offense to his game. I have been really pleased with David Andersen. If he can continue to develop a defensive game then he will be more than a capable backup once The Great Wall comes back. Scola is Scola. We play Brooks too many minutes but it has been nice to see Lowry step up and take some of these minutes the last few games. I love Aaron Brooks. His game has evolved more than I could have ever wished, and I think he is an elite point guard in this league. But, he has shown his temper lately. I don't get upset when a player gets a random technical but AB has been bitching a lot as of late. I hate players that bitch at the officials. I was one of the worst to be honest with you. I want our team to just play the game. We have to realize that we aren't going to get all of the calls with the absense of a superstar, and we just need to go do what we do. We play hard. We play the right way. And I will take our chances against anyone in the league. I know this is an earfull right now, but I am just expressing my thoughts. Kyle Lowry's shot seems to be coming along, but he is a bit out of control at times. I find myself yelling uncontroulable at the television system 4 times a game when he runs the fast break. I just want him to slow down. I am learning to be more faithful in him at the end of games. As long as his shot continues to improve he will be a viable point guard in this league. Carl Landry is an ANIMAL. I love him. I am very glad that I made the purchase of his authentic jersey 2 years ago during game 22 of our streak. I will never regret that decision. He plays so hard. He is a warrior. He is quickly becoming the model player of our team. He doesn't care that he doesn't start- he just wants to help the team win. And, he does this to perfection. Battier had an incredible game the other night against Oakland. I was starting to wonder about his ability then he went out and had an incredibly efficient first half. His game has defenitly taking a slide for the worst, but he still plays good defense and is a valuable asset to our squad.
I know this has been a lot of blah blah blah and random. I did not have any idea what I was going to write when I started this piece, I just kind of let it go. Typical Sunday in the life of the Dos. I want to wish Tracy McGrady good luck in his rehab and I really do hope to God that he comes back with a new attitude and a want to win. He really could be an incredible asset to this team and help us get over the next hump. These Rockets are blue collar. They play the game the way that Dr. Naismith intended it to be played. I love the Rockets. I love the Noles. I love the direction that both of my teams are moving in. It's a great time to be the Dos. I want to wish everyone a happy Sunday.

note: this was written while under the influence of many beverages. sorry if it was just rambling.

Pick of the Day

Washington +3 @ Detroit

Basis: Washington has won 2 out of 3 and I like them to continue their winning ways. I know Detroit has also won 2 out of 3, but I really do like the Wizards tonight. Ben Gorden MAY be back and obviously everyone knows that Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun are out. Look for this game to be kind of sloppy. I like a low scoring game, and I like Washington to win it outright. Go ahead and take the money line if you feel like gambling.

Sunday Update: I suck.

Thank You Alabama

Pick of the Day

Toronto +6 @ Chicago

Basis: I have decided that I am going to ride Toronto until the get out of their slump. Chicago coming off a back to back. If you really feel like gambling, then take Toronto money line. This game is going to hit. You got to trust me people.

Saturday Update: Winner winner Chicken dinner.

Pick of the Day Record: 11-9-1

Pick of the Day

Dallas -6 @ Memphis

Basis: Dallas has won 4 of their last 5 and seem to be hitting a little stride. Memphis has been on the road for a while and I look for them to stumble getting it going back at home. Dallas matches up well with Memphis, especially with Dampier back in the lineup. This game might be close for a while, but I like Dallas to win by double digits when it's all said and done.
Friday Update: I failed you again. Geeze what a stink bomb by Dallas. I PROMISE that I am going to turn this around. We would be killing if I told you all the games I play- I just seem to tell you the games I lose. This will be changed. Stick with me, you'll regret it if you don't.

Pick of the Day

Parlay: Boston +1.5 @ San Antonio and Miami +8.5 @ Denver

Basis: Miami is on a much needed road trip where they can actually grow as a team instead of playing at home with the pressure of the fans to get it going. We saw them take a step the other night by getting the W in Portland. I like their improvement to continue tonight in Denver. They may not win, but I like them to fight and keep it close throughout. Have I mentioned how much I like 8+point underdoggs in the NBA? I love them. Both Boston and San Antonio are on 5 game win streaks, but I take the Celtics here because of favorable matchups. I have a feeling that this game could get ugly. Boston has owned Tim Duncan over the last few seasons, and I don't see why that would change tonight. Once again, parlay these two games. And, for clarification, I am playing this parlay as ONE game in my POTD record, not two- because I will parlay them as well.
Thursday Night Update: My Celtics pick was flawless. The Heat are struggling right now, but remember- this is a game of runs. Stay tuned. Miami laid an egg. Sorry followers. I should have just stuck with the one game I liked. Future tip- don't bet parlays. Doc C once told me that his bookie said you can call him at anytime while he is doing anything and he will pick up the phone for a parlay bet. This was bad judgement on my part.
Pick of the Day Record: 10-8-1

Pick of the Day

Houston -2.5 @ Los Angeles Clippers
Basis: As of now, it is looking like Luis Scola will be in the line up tonight wearing protective goggles- I like this game even if Scola doesn't play. I like the way we match up with there somewhat eratic play. I think Hayes will be very effective guarding Kaman and Andersen can play with the likes of Marucs Camby, but DeAndre Jordan may pose a few match up problems. The key match up is how we can defend Al Thorton. If he can get hot, then it could be a difference maker. The Clippers have quite a bit of talent, but I still like this young Rockets team to battle and pull out a win at the end. Eric Gordon is listed as questionable, which downgrades their point guard play. It is also important to note that this line moved 3.5 points in favor of the Rockets already. As long as it stays under 4 points, I think it is a solid choice. Rockets by 13 in this one.
edit: I don't know what I was thinking saying that DeAndre Jordan was going to cause problems. My fault.
Late Wednesday Update: Kudos to Adelman for sticking with the second teamers + Ariza in the crunch time. We had a great balance of scoring. Budinger came in and played really well. I am really proud of Scola for playing through the eye problem, and Budinger playing through the sprained ankle. It was nice to see Novak get some minutes, as he always holds a special spot in my heart for hitting the game winner in game 8 of the 22 game streak, but, right when he got in the new and improved Rocket Novak- Budinger- rained a 3 on him. I really enjoy watching Kaman play- the dude never, ever bitches about the officials. It is quite refreshing to see, especially for someone who plays down low. Sorry, I was 4 points off on the 13 point win prediction. I am very confident that if I picked all 82 Rocket games against the spread during the season that I would have a record of at worst 65-17. I would do this, but the problem lies within my moral beliefs. I could never tell someone to bet against my team. Anyway, great win. See you in Golden State tomorrow. Travel safely fellas.

From Mainframe_nole on Warchant

"How can I begin? He came here and inherited a grease fire for an offense at a time when the only person keeping the FSU team afloat, Kevin Steele, was leaving. He took over an offense that was left in shambles after Jeff Bowden was done with it.
Witch each succeeding year FSU's offense got better and its defense got worse. His presence was so critical as the FSU offensive coordinator that many other programs were trying to hire him as their head coach. In a strategic move the FSU athletic department offered him the keys to the head coaching job when Bobby retires, thus eliminating the threat from other college football programs desperately looking for a viable head coach.
The following two years FSU's defense nearly collapsed. Had the offense done the same FSU would've fallen off the deep end and turned into the Nebraska of the early 2000's. Had the administration not had the wisdom to go to extreme measure to retain him then it's likely Bobby's retirement wouldn't have been a retirement, but an outright firing. Had all these terrible things transpired FSU's football program would've gone from the highest heights to rock bottom in the quickest time college football has ever seen.
But, as the defense was falling apart and defensive recruiting turned into a grease fire, Jimbo was slowly, patiently preserving and slowly rebuilding the offense from the Hiroshima that Jeff Bowden left it. Brick by brick, inch by inch, against the prevailing current that wanted to engulf the entire program, Jimbo patiently endured the criticism from impatient and spoiled fans that wanted the hurricane Katrina type disaster that his predecessor left him to be turned around in a year, and stayed the course.
By the end of 2008 the tables turned and the offense became the saving grace for FSU football. By 2009 the offense that Jimbo built was all that stood in the way between the abyss and the football program. With Jimbo's offense FSU would've resembled what it looked like the year before Bobby arrived in 1975."
I couldn't have said this better, so I thought it was appropriate to post Mainfram_nole's thoughts here on the Chuck Wagon.
There will be no pick of the day today, but if you feel like gambling take Boston -3.5 @ Charlotte. Today and tonight will be used for one thing: remembering Coach Bowden. I will be watching ESPN Classic all night and will not have time for NBA games. I apologize to people who were looking for me to get on a roll- it will have to wait another day.
Thank you for all you have done Coach Bowden. I have already booked airfare, hotel, and gotten Gator Bowl tickets. The Gator Bowl better freaking take us like they said. See you in Jacksonville, Coach. At least I hope to see you in Jacksonville.
The world is a funny place, you know. I try to look at every mistake I make, and believe me-I have made my share, as a learning experience and not as an experience to regret. But, I wholeheartedly regret the negativity that I shared with regards to Coach Bowden. I think it is fair to say that it is time to move forward, but I just wish it had gone down differently and that I had acted differently. I want what is best for the football program, but losing Coach Bowden is just a shot to the heart. He is the only coach I know. It's a tough day for the Nole Nation. Thanks for everything Coach. You're the best.

The End of an Era

If what is expected to occur does in fact happen, tomorrow will mark the end of an era, excluding a bowl game appearance obviously. You can be sure to see a full write-up on my opinion. At this current moment, I am having a real tough time wrapping my emotions around this. I am at a complete loss for words. Completely bitter sweet. Bobby Bowden is one of my heroes and idols. This is just too much to handle right now.
Go Noles

Pick of the Day

Milwaukee -2.5 vs. Chicago
Basis: I am not crazy about the NBA games tonight, but this one makes the most sense to me. Both teams have been struggling lately evidenced by their 4 game respective losing streaks. The reason that I tend to gravitate towards the Bucks in this one is the fact that their losses have been in closer games. Chicago has been getting blown out of the water and the diagnosis on Kirk Hinrich is that he will not be able to go tonight. I also like the fact that this game will be played in the Bradley Center. Look for this game to be a close one throughout, with Milwaukee pulling away in the second half of the 4th quarter.
Monday Night Update: Betting the NBA is a tough job. Milwaukee started to pull away only to let John Salmons and the Bulls come back. This league is a league of runs. Delfino makes 1 of 2 then Salmons drains a second chance 3. Brandon Jennings knocks down two clutch free throws with 13 seconds left in regulation. Of course they let Salmons go in for a quick deuce the following play. Charlie Bell then goes up and and makes 1 of 2 for the 2 point win. I lose by a half point. Sorry followers. I prefaced this one by saying that I wasn't crazy about these games. Hopefully tomorrow I will find something that I really like. Stay tuned.

Loyal Followers of the Chuck Wagon-
Be on the look out for a post devoted to the 2009 Florida State football season and Head Coach Bobby Bowden within the next week. There is a lot of stuff going on in Tallahassee, and it might get ugly. Also, I am thinking about writing a piece on the Rockets dissecting the season at this juncture, including, for the first time, going all out citing certain players that I believe are not carrying their weight. For the first time in years, I feel that the Rockets are in potential big time trouble. It is a must win tonight in Oklahoma City. We must bounce back. I hope everyone had a good holiday with your respective families.
Dos

Pick of the Day

Houston Money Line @ Oklahoma City Thunder

Basis: Depending on the site you use to make your selection, you will receive Rockets +125-+135. These odds are too good to pass on. The Rockets are in about as desperate need of a win as you can be 16 games into the season. Oklahoma City has been playing well recently picking up wins at Utah and home against Milwaukee. But, I like the Rockets to bounce back. It always seems with our young group that when the going gets tough we step up to the plate and make a statement. Look for the Rockets to win this one by 5-12 points.

Late Sunday Update: Rockets get it done and win by 9. We were dealt a blow on the very first play when Scola got swiped on the eye causing the need for 7 stitches. He did not return. We fought back after a 10 point deficit and we showed great heart. It was a really rewarding team victory. Carl Landry played like a man possessed and, along with AB, refused to let us lose. We dominated the offensive glass, especially in the second half. It was a great win and more importantly, a must win. Go Rocks.

Pick of the Day

There will be no pick of the day on this 28th day of November, year 2009. The reason being that this day belongs to one team- The Noles. PotD will return tomorrow. Thank you for understanding.

Pick of the Day

Toronto +10 @ Boston
Basis: Once again, I love double digit doggs in the NBA. Toronto is a solid team and Boston hasn't been too convincing lately. I like Toronto to keep this game close throughout, maybe even winning. The +400 Money Line might be a decent play if you really feel like gambling.
Late Friday Update: I didn't see the game. But I did see that Orlando was winning at halftime but gave up some ridiculous run in the 3rd quarter. I lost the bet, but I stand by the pick.

Pick of the Day- Turkey Day Edition

We are going to try something different on this Turkey Day 2009. Along with picking my usual NBA Game, I am also going to pick all three NFL football games. Here we go. I am also going to leave out the "basis" section of my picks, so you'll just have to trust me people. Current record is 6-3-1.
NFL:
Green Bay -12 @ Detroit
Oakland/Dallas > 40
New York Football Giants -6 @ Denver
NBA:
Orlando +3.5 @ Atlanta
Happy Turkey Day to all. I am thankful for The Rockets, The Noles, Family and Friends, and, of course, all loyal followers and supporters of The Chuck Wagon. God Bless.
Running Turkey Day Updates:
Green Bay got it done with the help of Matthew Stafford's 4 picks. Pick of the Day Record: 7-3-1.
Oakland and Dallas didn't get it done. This is why I hate betting over/unders. 7-4-1.
Orlando did the work. Won the game outright in Atlanta. I watched some of the second half and it really wasn't a match. I really liked Orlando's bigs going against Atlanta's athleticism. 8-4-1.
New York Football Giants laid a stink bomb. Sorry about this one fellas. 8-5-1. Still a .500 day.

Pick of the Day

Cleveland -5 @ Detroit

Basis: Detroit is just a bad team, to put it honestly. They are young. They are missing Teyshaun and Rip. It is a good thing that Shaq is not in to clog up the middle for the Cavs. This game scares me only because of the Palace at Auburn Hills. But, not enough to stay away from it. I like the Cavs to win this one down the stretch by anywhere from 9 to 21 points.
Thursday Morning Update: Didn't watch a second of the game but the outcome was within my range of prediction. Cleveland won by 10. You're welcome.
Pick of the Day Record: 6-3-1

Pick of the Day

Toronto -5 vs. Indiana
Basis: Toronto is more talented all over the floor. I realize that Toronto last their last outing, but it was to a surging Magic team. Last time out, Indiana was beaten like Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania XVII by Charlotte. Toronto is playing at home in the friendly confines of the Air Canada Centre. I like Toronto to never really be challenged in this one and win by 12-18 points.
Tuesday Night Update: I was pretty much right on with this one. The game was never in doubt. The Raptors were in control the entire contest and strolled to an 11 point win.
Pick of the day Record: 5-3-1

Pick of the Day

Sacramento +5.5 @ Mephis

Basis: Just trust me.

Tuesday Morning Update: Sorry.

King Solomon's Mind

Jerome Solomon is an ignorant sports writer. This much we know for certain. He wrote one of the most asinine pieces of shit that I have ever read, and to be honest with you, I am embarrassed that a Houston newspaper would run the story. It embarrassed my city. I have attempted to find a biography to see this man's background, but could not come up with one. Anyone who did not read said piece of shit probably shouldn't waste their time. Here is the link anyway:
Really bad piece pretty much belittling every thing that the Rockets have accomplished this year. He obviously doesn't understand basketball and the fact that he gets paid to write this crap about my Rockets is unforgivable. I urge all loyal followers of the Chuck Wagon to take action. He is taking shots at this web site's name sake. We cannot let this aggression stand. We cannot allow him to get away with this behavior. I have already placed calls into the Chronicle asking for his immediate termination, but just me complaining won't make anything happen. Send the Chronicle a letter, call them, and even go down to the physical location and make your voices be heard.

We must attack this problem and eliminate Solomon before it gets any worse. This man must go.
On another note: my two teams, The Rockets and The Noles, cause more heart attacks for their fans than any other teams. It's a fact. I had 7 heart attacks yesterday. All I want for Christmas is one blow out. Just one time, I want to be able to relax and just enjoy a game simply because it is sport. Just once. I don't think that is too much to ask.
I want to give some big time props to EJ Manual for not getting down on himself after his 3 picks (2 of which were not his fault) and leading us down the field to win the game at the end. He had a little Vince Young in him in that last drive. I would like to see him put more zip on his ball, which I know he has, but he seems to try to throw the finesse ball every time. I am really happy to see us send Mickey out of the Doak with a win. It's going to be a really big challenge next week in the Swamp. For us to win, the perfect storm will have to occur. Jams, If you're out there, we will try to beat them up for you some before the SEC title game.
The Rockets had a workmanlike victory over the Kings last night to improve to 8-6 on this young season. We have a challenging week ahead with the other 2 Texas teams coming down to Toyota. It would make a huge statement if we could get both games. I am really tired and I need a nap, so I am not going to get into the reasons why we lost in Atlanta and won last night. Sorry fans. I will make it up to you at some point.
I want to emphasize how imperative it is that we all work to get Jerome Solomon fired. He doesn't deserve to have the privilege to follow our Houston Franchises. It's just not right. Please help the cause. The Dos really appreciates it.
Go Noles.
Go Rockets.
I am the Man.
Happy Sunday.
God Bless.
The Dos Wagon.

Pick of the Day

New Orleans +9.5 @ Miami

Basis: I am a big believer in double digit, or near double digit, underdoggs when betting the NBA. New Orleans has been playing better as of late even with out the services of Chris Paul, and Miami has been struggling. I like the Hornets to keep this game close throughout.
Sunday Night Update: New Orleans fell back early in the second half but stormed to take a late lead with excellent 3 point shooting. They ended up losing by 1, but covered with the points.
Pick of the Day Record: 4-2-1

Pick of the Day

New Jersey -1.5 vs. New York

Basis: This game is pretty much a toss up, and after last night's debacle I don't really feel like diving in to research. Anyway, look for New Jersey to play inspired ball in this one and beat their cross town rivals to get their first victory of the year. New Jersey has some young talent, but have struggled with some injuries so far in this young season. Lawrence Frank is a decent coach who can win in this league. They just have to put a full game together, and I like them to do that tonight against the Knicks.

Saturday Update: Loyal followers of The Wagon- I failed you. I made a very rushed decision this morning with the pick of the day. New Jersey lost 98-91 and remains 0-fortheseason. I didn't watch any of the game so I have no comment on why I lost this pick. I really did not have my mind right and I explained when I made my pick that I did not do my research- I just went off my gut. I apologize for the losing pick. Check back tomorrow for Sunday's pick of the day.

Pick of the Day Record: 3-2-1

Pick of the Day

Houston +7 @ Atlanta

Basis: I absolutely refuse to bet Florida State games, but I will, on occasion, bet Rockets games- and I will only bet for them, never against them. I do this about 10 times a year and I have been quite successful. Anyway, I just really believe that we will make a statement tonight. It's not too often that you get a chance for a big statement game this early in the year, and I like us to take advantage. I would advise to take the money line, but given our inability to play well in close games in the 4th so far this year, I would just take the points.

Late Friday Update: Wow. What a perfect pick. And my prediction of not betting the money line because of our inability to play a close game was right on the money. We, of course, had a 5 point lead and start standing around on the offensive end and give up a 17-2 run before we decide to start attacking again. Really a tough loss. I am very, very upset right now. So frustrated. We are in trouble tomorrow. Pick of the day tomorrow may very well be Sacramento but I can't give that because it is against the Rockets. I have so many thoughts about the Rocks right now, but I will save those for another day. To steal one from Denny Green- "THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!" They really were. We are better than they are. We really are a top 5 team in the league. But, you aren't a top tier team in everyone's eyes, or more importantly the record's eyes, until you can win close games. We have made beautiful strides all year, but the big stride is winning close games. This was the 4th time this year where we have struggled in a close 4th quarter. We HAVE to come ready tomorrow or we will get beat. Go Rockets. We lost 105-103

Pick of the Day Record: 3-1-1

Respect

The following excerpt is from a writer for a Minneapolis paper:

These current Rockets are a paradox. Because they share the ball, because they hustle and play committed defense, (not to mention that they easily fit the mold of scrappy, un-famous underdogs) they are beloved by "play the right way" purists. But because they feature a quirky, non-traditional lineup full of oddly shaped, idiosyncratically talented players, whose skills align only tangentially with the traditional but tired box-score statistics (their starting center is 6'6"; possibly their most famous current player has become known as "no-stats all-star"), and because they run the floor and shoot threes with abandon, they are also at the vanguard of everything new and weird and great about the current NBA.

The Rockets are somehow both conservative and radical.Actually, in many ways their conservatism is their radicalism. Because they share the ball, they're frequently called "unselfish," a favorite "right-way" buzzword. But, even in the NBA, selfishness is not the monster its made out to be. The problem is trust. Players have learned--because of the cutthroat world of elite youth basketball, because the league's salary system heavily favors dominant scorers, because they are all so phenomenally talented--not to trust their teammates, to trust only their own skills.

But for whatever reason, perhaps because none of their current team has ever been an NBA star, Houston's players know that if they all give up a little control, to trust each other to move the ball to the right spot at the right time, they'll all get better chances to score. The upshot of this is that, when they're at the best, they move the ball more creatively and dynamically than almost any team in the league. And this really appeals to aesthetes like me, who care more about the game being beautiful and amazing than just about anything else. So its this reliance on certain classic 'fundamentals'--'unselfishly' moving the ball, for instance--that has made this ragtag bunch unique and entertaining in a totally non-traditional way.

Pick of the Day

Utah +5 @ San Antonio

Basis: Both teams played back-to-backs last night. Utah pulled away at the end of their game and San Antonio got beat in overtime. Look for Utah to have a few more legs in them tonight. Deron Williams is fully healthy for the Jazz- look for him to have a big outing with the Spurs missing both Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli. I would almost say bet Utah money line, but, it is in San Antonio so just take the points.

Late Thursday Update: My pick was pretty flawless tonight. I didn't watch a second because of a family dinner that I was forced to go to. By the way- if I was in a city where I had distant family that I've never really met, I would never have the audacity to ask to go to dinner- much less a place to stay. I mean come on- is that necessary? Anyway, I picked a winner. I am starting to feel more comfortable. Look for tomorrow's pick and I will give you a hint- you might see the Rockets show up for the first time in this new segment of the Chuck Wagon- maybe even a money line bet. Stay tuned.

Pick of the Day Record: 2-1-1

The Wagon's Stat Line Last Night

11 Points
10 Rebounds
4 Steals
4 Charges Taken
0 Turnovers

The Rockets were +19 points when he was on the floor.

Now, that is value people. The Wagon is rollin' on down the trail.

Pick of the Day

Toronto +9 @ Utah

Wednesday Night Update: I lost this bet. 14-0 runs in the 4th quarter don't help. Toronto lost 105-91.

Pick of the Day Record: 1-1-1

Quick Hitter

Just stood around in the 4th quarter. ABSOLUTLY RIDICULOUS. We better learn that we cannot just stand around in the half court without Tracy McGrady. We have to keep running. And we can’t because Brooks has been playing an enormous amount of minutes lately and it seems that his legs are feeling the effects. Just a PATHETIC effort in the 4th quarter. Stopped rotating on the defensive side of the floor and stood around waiting for SOMEONE ELSE to make a play instead of playing as a unit on the offensive side. Landry played well in the 4th but that is about it. We better take this as a reality check and realize that we aren’t good enough to get by with 3 quarters of good ball and then mail it in during the 4th. Really frustrating and I am extremely upset about the way we got after it in the final period. This game, the first Laker game, and the Dallas game illustrate why we HAVE to have a healthy and motivated team-first Tracy McGrady back. Trevor Ariza is a FABULOUS defensive player- really really good- but WOW he is limited on the offensive end. He can shoot the open 3 but he has a HORRIBLE handle and takes it up like a little girl along with atrocious footwork. It is truly unbelievable how he shies away from contact. I about threw the remote through the television numerous times last night after he beat his man of the first dribble, had a path to the lane, and stops and pulls out because he doesn’t want contact. And, when he does go to the lane he falls back and can’t finish at all. I MEAN COME ON! You have great jumping ability- freaking use it. Unbelievable. He also got away with at least 4 traveling calls. Scola needs to get his act together. Kyle Lowry needs to find a way to get his shots to fall. Budinger needs to play more. Chuck Hayes is fine. Brooks is fine- but we need KLow7 to be able to score with some consistency so Brooks can get a few more breathers. Andersen cannot rebound for the life of him- but I am giving him a pass because it was only his 10th NBA game ever. Battier needs to knock down his shots with more consistency. We look incredible at times on the defensive end with text book rotations, only to have mental lapses when it counts most. During the third, we finally got hot again, but it didn’t matter because of our unexplainable decision to stop rotating over and giving up numerous points in the paint. Overall, easily the most frustrated I have been this season. And this frustration came as a reality check. We sure are capable of looking like one of the top teams in the league at any moment but we got to learn consistency. We got to learn the killer instinct. Until we do this, we are going to struggle in close contests, it’s as simple as that. We have an opportunity to take this bad taste out of our mouths tonight against the Fighting Rambises. Thank Goodness for the NBA and quick turnarounds because I am losing it after that 4th quarter performance last night.

Praise be to Allah

Wednesday Update: I want to apologize to the Rockets, and especially Trevor Ariza. I just kind of lost it this morning. Last night was tough for me to swallow. I came to the office and my brother emailed asking what happened last night and the blog you see above was originally an email in response to him. I just lost it. I ask for forgiveness. Trevor Ariza is already one of my favorite Rockets- the dude plays hard. He gets after it. He doesn't make excuses. But, he does have parts of his game that do need to be worked on. I've been killing myself over this since I wrote the fired up words this morning. I sincerely apologize to all of Rocket Nation, the Rocket Team, and most importantly, the loyal followers of the Chuck Wagon. I used poor judgement. I expect to see a big game out of Ariza tonight. I can't wait to see us bounce back and get back on track. Go Rockets.

Pick of the Day

Oklahoma City +7 @ Miami

Late Tuesday Update: My first winner in the Chuck Wagon Pick of the Day. I only saw a little of the first half, due to the Rockets game, and Oklahoma City looked pretty dominant. The final score also shows that Oklahoma City had the game under control the entire way through.

Pick of the Day Record: 1-0-1

Look for Wednesday pick prior to 5 o'clock CST.
"At the time, it didn't make sense for me. The situation with Yao [Ming], not knowing when Tracy [McGrady] is coming back. My goal is to try to get with a team that's capable of winning a championship, not just to get back and play," Stackhouse told ESPN.com. "Looking back and seeing how hard those guys are playing, I could have been a help to them. They play hard, I'm really impressed."

It is pretty impressive when former all-stars are basically saying they regret not accepting a Rocket Training Camp Invite. It is beautiful to see players recognize how hard we play.

Pick of the Day

Portland +4 @ Atlanta

Tuesday Morning Update: I pushed this bet. Portland held a nine point leading in the 4th quarter. It's amazing to me that they are such porous rebounders. They were totally out manned on the glass by a more aggressive Hawks team. Also, Rudy Fernandez hit a 3 at the buzzer to force overtime, so, if he had missed that I would have covered. That's the way the NBA works people. Look for a new pick out sometime today.

Pick of the Day Record: 0-0-1

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Loyal Followers of the Chuck Wagon:

Tonight we play the Lakers in Los Angeles. It is going to be a tough game. The loss to Sacramento was inexcusable. We just simply can't lose those kind of games. It is imperative that we beat the teams we should beat if we want to successfully march to the playoffs. If we lose tonight, then we are back at .500 with a very hot, and surprisingly solid, Phoenix team coming into Toyota on Tuesday. It would be really nice to get a win tonight somehow. We have got to stay afloat.

When Tracy comes back, it will be very interesting to see how he fits into our rotation. Who do we start? Do we bring Tracy off the bench? Would Tracy even be willing to come off the bench? If we decide to bring him off the bench, would he randomly decide that he needs another surgery? These are all legitimate and important questions to ask at this juncture. I personally don't believe that TMac buys into our team concept, heart, which is not a good sign. He has the potential to run this team into the ground, but I trust Rick Adelman to not let this happen. I believe that if he shows a me-first attitude that he will be traded sooner, rather than later.

My heart of hearts tells me that for some reason TMac is going to play hard, and I would personally like to see him come off the bench with the likes of Carl Landry, Kyle Lowry and David Andersen. Look at the possible lineup:

Starters: Arron Brooks at the point. Trevor Ariza at shooting guard. Shane Battier at small forward. Luis Scola at power forward. Chuck Hayes at Center.

First substitution line up: Arron Brooks at the point. Trevor Ariza at shooting guard. Tracy McGrady at small forward. Carl Landry at power forward. Chuck Hayes at center.

Midway through 2nd quarter line up: Kyle Lowry at the point. Chase Budinger at shooting guard. Tracy McGrady at small forward. Carl Landry at power forward. David Andersen at center.

This second quarter line up is a quality one. There would be ample amount of space created with athleticism all over the floor. It could be a really solid combination with Lowry and McGrady slashing and geting open 3's for Budinger and Andersen, while also creating open 15 footers for Carl Landry. The running game would also be ideal with this line up assuming McGrady is willing to push it.

The finishing the game line up: numerous possibilities. Some combination of Lowry and or Brooks if one of them is hot. 2 of TMac/Battier/Ariza/Budinger with Scola or Landry down low. Yes, in a tight game against a big team, Hayes would probably need to be in the game. But, the addition to McGrady, a competent creator of a score, changes our whole complexion late in games. Our offense would be less stagnant in the half court while we would still possess the ability to run.

Our defense is starting to worry me a little bit. We are just out sized. Don't mistake out sized with out manned. We are not out manned. We have the talent and skill set to play with anyone, it is just tough sometimes when our 5 players are at such a size disadvantage. We are having a lot of trouble rebounding the ball with any consistency. Against Sacramento we really struggled to clean up the glass and gave up numerous second chance points. Hayes struggled pretty good for the first time this year against a more athletic big man. But, I honestly don't know where to go from that. Do we stick Landry on a big athletic Center? I am not too sure. I would just prefer to stay with Hayes.

About Hayes....has anyone else noticed his improvement on the offensive end? He actually has developed some pretty decent post moves which is a beautiful sight to see. He still does sometimes pick the wrong times to attack though.

Overall, I think we will bounce back from this recent adversity and continue to improve. I am very anxious to see if McGrady can be a team-first guy that just wants to win. It may be wishful thinking, but I believe he will be a valuable addition to our squad. And, if for some reason he is not, then it is bye-bye Tracy.

Good luck tonight Rocks.

The Noles won yesterday. I was very interested in seeing EJ Manual in a prominent role. He passed the first test. We didn't open up the whole playbook, and ran solidly throughout, but he shows potential. He is so big and athletic that the imagination can come up with numerous scenarios of him excelling in Jimbo's dynamic offense. It was nice to see Ty Jones back in there at running back and have himself a good game. Jermain Thomas really has run hard the last few games, and the future looks bright with our current crop of tail backs. Recievers did a nice job. Fortson played his best game of the season and had the best tackle for our team on EJ's only mistake of the game.

The defense played well in spots, but there are still so many weaknesses. We really need to tackle better and get more pressure from the front 4. Our tackling is horrendously bad at times. It makes us look like a JV defense. But, once again, very excited to see who Jimbo brings in to run that side of the ball. The bright spot: we can't get any worse.

We play Maryland next week in Mickey's final game inside The Doak. It will be an emotional game and we are breaking in some new Nike Oregon-like uniforms with Black Helmets. I thought our school colors were Garnet and Gold? I hate all these uniform experiments. Let's just do away with all these white out/black out games and stick to tradition. Garnet tops with Gold bottoms at home- with the occasional All Garnet look, and White tops with Gold pants on the road- with the occasional White top and Garnet pants look.

In other news, my gambling skills have really hit a wall. I need to get back on the drawing board and climb myself out of this funk. I am going to start giving a pick-of-the-day in NBA games starting tomorrow. I am hoping that this will help my luck. When you gamble like us Sims' do, it's easy to see why Vegas is such a successful city. In the end, unless you are really really good, you are probably going to lose. I believe in my ability to pick sporting contests, and I am determined to gain my bank roll back and beat Vegas. I am not going to stop until I do.

I just ordered a new computer that I cannot afford, but I went ahead and did it anyway. 2 23' LCD monitors are going to make doing research for my blogs much easier, and you can expect more posts from The Bomb of Dos. This new computer is also going to be used to create the resurgence of The Iced Out Eskimoz. I have already spoken to Big Yeast and IceBurg Slim, and there will be a few studio sessions that go on over the Thanksgiving Holiday. If anything of substance comes from them other than drunken freestyles, I will be sure to post the product on here. It's the IOE. This purchase of a computer has for sure pushed my move out date from my parent's home to at least June of next year- possibly longer. If it was up to me, I would stay forever. I don't see why not. I don't bother my parents. I leave them alone and have my own space. I pretty much just come home from work- couch it- eat it- then sleep it. I don't see why I would need to leave- I'd just be back over here for any Rocket or Nole or sporting event of interest because I would never have as good a TV setup out on my own. We will see what happens. My Father hinted at me yesterday that it was time to move out- but I am convinced that he didn't mean it. I think my Mother put him up to it- shame on them. I am a gift. They should cherish the time they have me. I am the Dos for crying out loud.

Does anyone else feel lost on Sundays? I really don't know what to do with myself on these days. I watch and gamble football, but I always feel worthless doing it. I do not feel worthless on Saturdays watching college games, but I do on Sundays. I don't understand. Maybe it is because I don't really have a pro team to route for. I have never been able to get into the Texans, even though I try to year after year. I need to come up with some scheme to make money and do all of my work on Sundays. So, if anyone has any ideas, please pass them along. I am money-hungry.

In closing, I would like to say Go Rockets and Go Noles. Happy Sunday to all the loyal followers of the Chuck Wagon. Take care and God Bless.

I really thought that Violet Palmer had left the NBA to become the head of the Mountain West Conference Woman's Basketball Officiating or something similar...I'm afraid I was either completely mistaken, or she sucked at that job too- because she was officiating the Suns/Lakers game last night. Holy Santa Clause Shit.....I am not looking forward to the first game she calls for My Rockets.
Happy Weekend. Look to see a new piece up sometime Sunday.

The Life of Dos

As I sit here, I am in pain.

I hurt. But hurt is what makes you stronger. Hurt makes you a better person. Hurt establishes your character. In a funny way, hurt is you. Hurt is the strongest emotion that an individual can feel. And it is imperative for you to hurt every now and again just to make sure you are still there. As Johnny Cash said, "I hurt myself today.....to see if I still feel."

Well people, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that I am hurting. I've been hurting. But, something inside of me, something deep down, tells me that this hurt is just the beginning of a healthy rejuvenation.

We lost last night. We got beat. We are most likely not going to go to a bowl. Bobby Bowden is still going to be here next year. There is a chance, although minute, that Christian Ponder will leave for the NFL. We will break in a new Defensive Coordinator next year. Doesn't sound so rosy, does it? Well, it sure as hell sounds rosy to me. We just need to get through the next 3 games, and start the rebuilding process. We are on the right track. I am pretty sure Jimbo Fisher has proven over the last few weeks that he deserves the keys to the program at the appropriate time, which I believe is now, but Bobby believes is at the end of next season. And, I am actually okay with this. We may struggle next year, but it sure would be awesome to send Bobby off after beating Florida at home. The program is heading in the right direction. I know this in my heart. I really do.

Once again, I am not going to get into X's and O's because it is irrelevant at this juncture as to why I believe we lost, but, I'd like to share a few quotes with the loyal followers of the Chuck Wagon that establish hope- establish credibility.

I would like to preface this quote by saying that becoming bowl eligible is NEVER, and I mean NEVER, an appropriate or acceptable goal. Never. Think about this for a second.....If your goal is to become bowl eligible, which occurs when you win 6 games, your goal is to have a .500 winning percentage. Your goal is to be average. Since when is it okay to be average? Why waste your breath if your goal is to be average. I am not okay with people saying that "well, at least we have a chance to play in a bowl". Bobby has already brought down most of his records at this point, what the hell difference does it make if we don't play in a bowl? He just loses one more record. My point is rather simple here. I don't want you to read too much into this. I just simply don't think that average should be acceptable and my goal for the rest of the season is to play hard, and to improve. And if that brings 2 more victories, then so be it. I will be happy to watch this team play in the EmeraldNuts Bowl on a baseball field. It would also be nice to get another month of work in preparing for the bowl, but it should never be a goal just to become bowl eligible.

Last night, Jimbo was asked what the motivation for the rest of the year is. He responded with:

"I hope pride and the wanting to win- if that doesn't motivate you, then you're in the wrong business."

This quote completely illustrates the difference in attitude towards winning between Jimbo and Old Bobby. Bobby would be perfectly content to just get bowl eligible, but not Jimbo. Sure, Jimbo would like to play in a bowl. But, he wants to improve. He is not okay with middle-of-the-road success. And, I am afraid to say it, but, Bobby seems okay with middle-of-the-road success.

Back in 2000, Bobby said that he would know it was time to go when we became a middle-of-the pack team. Well, we became one of these teams back in 2002. And he's still holding on for dear life. Look, I love Bobby Bowden. He is the single reason why I am a Seminole Booster, Alumni Association Member, and Season Ticket Holder. But, isn't enough enough? It's painful to see his legacy tarnish like this to the outside world. His legacy will never tarnish with the true Seminole faithful because we understand how important he has been to our program. He took a Woman's Teachers School and turned it into the greatest dynasty that college football has ever seen, and ever will see, from '87-'00. Bobby, we won't forget. We never will forget. Just hang 'em up though. It's time.

But, once again, my over-loyalty will force me to write a check for an amount that I cannot afford to the Florida State University this coming spring because of my love for this man. I want him to retire, but I will support him unwaveringly until he actually decides to.

Accountability. You have to have it to be successful. My Father told me a long time ago that there are 3 rules. He said you have to work hard, have integrity, and take responsibility for your actions. Think about that for a second. It's true. Almost all successful people in this world have these three attributes in their lives. Christian Ponder sure does.

"We had a chance to win the game and I didn't come through."

That is coming from a guy who has a rib contusion, sprained ankle, and now a separated shoulder. He takes accountability. This was the first game of the season that he actually played poorly and just like when we lost games that he played great in, he took accountability. It has been a pleasure to watch him grow into a great leader and probably the best quarterback in the country. Yes, I just said best quarterback in the country.

There are two positives that come from his separated shoulder. 1- he will probably stay for his senior year now, and not test the NFL. 2- we get to see what EJ Manual can do. We already know what Ponder can do, and we feel really good about next year with him back under center, but now we get to see the future. I am genuinely excited to see EJ in action the next few games. How great would it be for him to go into Gainsville and hand them their first loss of the season- on Tebow's senior day? Tebow is easily the most overrated athlete in the history of sports by the way. It would be beautiful. And yes, it is okay to dream.

Now, on a more happy note- let's talk about the Rockets.

Writing these words doesn't give it justice. If there is a more refreshing sight out there in the world than The Rockets, I haven't seen it. That's how I would describe this team at this juncture in the season- refreshing.

Re-fresh-ing (adjective): 1: having the power to restore freshness, vitality, energy, ect. 2: pleasingly fresh or different.

Synonyms: bracing, invigorating, stimulating, renewing, intoxicating, restorative, energizing.

This is the Rockets. It is what we are. We are heart. The way we play is energizing. It is intoxicating. It is stimulating. It is simply a beautiful sight to see. It's amazing to see the power that you can create when you have different parts working as one. I said at the beginning of the season that we were going to struggle at times. I predicted a 7th or 8th place finish in the Western Conference. I still believe we are going to struggle at times this year. It is inevitable. We may go on a few 4 or 5 game losing streaks. It will happen. But I've never been so sure of something in my life than what I am about to say. We will bounce back from adversity. It is our make up- it's in our DNA.

I don't see why we cant be the division winner and a 2 or 3 seed at this point. Even being as unbiased as I possibly can be, I don't see why this can't happen. I think it is pretty easy to see, for anyone who is an NBA fan, that the best team in Texas plays its home games at a place called Toyota Center that resides on Bell and LeBranch Street in Downtown Houston.

We have the hardest working guys in the NBA. It is simply a fact. We have a team that plays the game for the right reasons. We have the best defensive player in the league in Chuck Hayes. If he doesn't make the all-defensive team if he continues to play at a rate close to what he has been playing at, I may boycott the NBA for several years. He embodies the passion, the pride, the "want to" that our team is built on. I wouldn't trade him for anybody in the league, because it is impossible to find someone that has what he has. Look, I'm not crazy. I know we probably aren't going to win it all, but who knows. I can guarantee you this though- there isn't one team that would be happy playing us in the playoffs. Our style of play is simply refreshing. We won't back down and we are going to play with heart. And we want to win. Our players wear their hearts on their sleeves- and as long as this holds true- we will have a fighter's chance.

I have been pondering this thought the past couple of days- who is responsible for this team of "want to" guys? And, the answer is not Daryl Morey. It's not Les Alexander. It's not Rick Adelman or Elston Turner or Jack Sikma or TR Dunn.

It's Jeff Van Gundy. The Legend himself. My favorite coach of all time.

He was a no bullshit guy to put it simply. He took shit teams to the playoffs. I mean seriously, go look at our roster in '05. TMac and Yao, then who? Ryan Bowen? Keith Bogans? David Wesly? Stromile Swift? He believed in hard work. He laid the foundation. He signed Hayes to that 10 Day contract. He believed in Hayes. And with that signing of Hayes, he forever changed the foundation of our squad. He wouldn't put up with players that had attitude issues- ie. Stro Swift and Bonzi Wells. There is no way he could have coached last years team with Ron Artest. I am convinced Ron would have been told to stay away- which wouldn't have ever occurred because he would have never given the "ok" to trade for him. This is where Adelman comes in to play. Adelman can coach these guys. There isn't a coach in the world that I would rather have than Rick Adelman with this squad. You are seeing his basketball brilliance this year. He's coaching players up that would be sitting in suits on other squads in the NBA. I love Rick Adelman, but, I love Jeff Van Gundy for laying that foundation that Rick has come in and run with.

Listen people, there are going to be struggles within this 82 game march to the playoffs. It's going to happen. But we have the skill set, and the mind set that allows you to overcome these struggles and come out a better ball club. I've never believed in something as strongly as I believe in these Rockets. I tear up when I think about them. I cried after we lost that game to the Lakers- but you know what- I know we are going to learn from that. That is the make up of this team. You hit a rocky stretch in the 4th quarter because we stopped playing our game- and it won't happen again. We will continue to push the ball- continue to get after it at 100 mph- continue to improve. I've never been so sure of anything in my life.

I also don't know how to take this whole "Chuck Hayes is becoming the most popular Rocket" thing. I don't know whether to get upset or embrace it. Chuck Hayes is MY guy, and he's been my guy for a long time now. I was the guy wearing his jersey to games and people would talk shit after a missed layup or a turn over. And I would take this personally. I wouldn't say anything back except "just wait". Well people, I think the wait is over. And it is completely bitter-sweet for me. I've longed for the day that Chuck Hayes received the respect that he so well deserves. But, I didn't expect to be upset about it. I hear people say things like "Chuck is the key to our team", "we can't be successful without Chuck", "Did you see how hard Chuck played tonight?"- all comments by people who said in the off season that we were screwed because Chuck Hayes was going to be our starting center. Really rubs me the wrong way. Did you not notice that Chuck plays harder than any player in the league on a nightly basis- and it's been happening for 5 years now? Did you not notice how Chuck was the key to us taking the Lakers to a Game 7 last year? Did you forget that he shut down Bynum last year in the playoffs? Did you forget that the reason we got off to a slow start in Game 7 was because we were picking our poison and stuck Chuck on Gasol to start the game- and what happened- Bynum started of hot? Did you not notice all these things? It would be one thing to share this guy with people who genuinely cared and respected what he has done- it's a completely other thing when people that hated him- resented him- didn't believe in him- for the past 5 years to finally jump on the band wagon- pun intended. I don't know. Maybe I am overreacting. I guess my love for this man just runs deeper than the love most people know. On a happier note, this stretch of play by him almost guarantees that he will be resigned and a Rocket for life- which is once again refreshing. He is too valuable to our Organization to let go.

I want to wish everyone a happy Sunday. God Bless.

Mickey.

Mickey Andrews is expected to announce his retirement, effective at the end of the season, this afternoon. I want to thank Mickey on behalf of all Noles for his 26 years of loyal and passionate service to the University. Florida State would not be what it is today without the man. Who knows what the early part of this decade would have looked like if we had an offense that was anywhere as good as our defense. It's a shame that now that the offense is clicking, the defense has faltered. Us Noles will always be indebted to Coach Andrews, and I wish him nothing but the best in his life after football.

Former FSU Cornerback Corey Fuller had this to say about Coach Andrews:

"Without him contributing as many years as he did, there wouldn't be a Florida State, there wouldn't be a Deion Sanders, Corey Fuller, Terrell Buckley, all the guys that came through, Samari Rolle. We were good players coming out of high school but he got the most out of our talent."

I hope that one day a statue will be put up in honor of Coach Andrews or the Indoor Practice Facility will bear his name. We owe him something of great significance for his diligence and passion for the Florida State University and all the players that played under his tutelage.

Thank you Coach Andrews. You will be missed. You are a true legend in the eyes of the Nole Faithful.

My Life

"I know that the personell in this locker room isn't overwhelming, but how hard we play is."

-Chuck Hayes

This quote embodies the reason for my living. I know everyone knows that I love the Rockets, but in reality, they don't know. My love runs deeper than the "love" everyone else understands and knows. My love is my life. I would honestly take a bullett for any Rocket. Any Rocket. I would allow my life to be taken if it meant that the City of Houston could enjoy another Rocket World Championship. It's a passion that few in this world have the blessesed opportunity to experience.

Then, there are the Noles. Wow. The love runs even deeper. Besides my family and immidiate friends, there is nothing of greater importance in my life. My life may seem boring. It may seem stagnant. It may seem that it has no fun. But, you are wrong. My life is full. My life is complete. The feeling I get from watching us drive down the field and score with 1 minute and 30 seconds left after trailing by 4 points is all I need. It is a much greater feeling than anyone could imagine. It is difficult for others to understand, and I understand this.

An individual must have courage to feel the way I do about the Rockets and the Noles. It is a commitment. It is a lifestyle. It means ditching those around you that care most about you on a Friday or Saturday night to watch a sporting event. In the end, though, it is these people that understand you most. It is these people that respect what you stand for the most. Respect is all we have.

I truely believe in this quote: "We can't run from what we are. Our destiny chooses us."

The Rockets and the Noles chose me.

It is my personal belief that I was put on this earth for 2 things: to be a Nole fan and to be a Rocket fan. These two things are my priority. It is what I have. It is what will always be. They will never go away.

These two things cause heartache. They cause sadness. They cause confusion. They cause happiness. They cause belief. They cause dreaming. They cause greatness.

The Rockets and the Noles are more pure than anything else in this world. They do it all. Every single emotion you could possibly feel are embodied by the Rocket Organization and the Florida State University.

Don't get me wrong- I am a family and friend first guy. If one of my brothers, or one of my best friends needed ANYTHING, that would take precident over the Noles or the Rockets. But, after that, the Rockets and the Noles are all I have. They are me. They are the most pure thing in my life.

The Rocket's roster is an oxymoron. Saying "the NBA player Chuck Hayes" is an oxymoron. It doesn't make sense. Jerome Solomen (a Houston Chronicle writer) said the other day that if "Brian Cook and Chuck Hayes are in your starting lineup, it's either preseason or your team stinks". I took this personally. It hurt my inside. It cut me deep. It makes me sick that someone who follows our city's sports franchises and gets paid to be an "expert" comes out and says something so damning and ignorant about one of OUR guys. The Wagon is the butt of many jokes, and he NEVER lets it affect his play. He is the underdogg. The definition of the underdogg. And he doesn't shy away. He plays with his heart. And I'm sorry to say this Jerome, but it is these players that make teams great, not stink. It is players like Chuck that make sports pure. I wouldn't trade Chuck Hayes for any great four or five man- Dwight, Pau, LaMarcus, Dirk, ect.- because they couldn't hold Chuck's jockstrap when it comes to value for THIS team. We are going to hit stretches where the going gets tough. But I promise you that we won't back down. We will wear our hearts on our sleeves and fight. There is no quit in this team.

I may be getting over-emotional about this. After all, it is only the 3rd game of the season. But I feel it. I commited to this team and this commitment doesn't break for anybody. The Rockets and the Noles are what's great in my life. They are what makes me happy. And, if you have a problem understanding this, or if this love pisses you off then you are just jealous. I am truely blessed to have this purity in my life. I don't need anything else other than the Rocks, the Noles, Family and close friends.

I know I have not gotten into X's and O's about yesterday's victorious games, and I'm not going to. The metaphore that is yesterday, is much deeper. Yesterday made me truely greatful for what I have. I know it sounds weird, but it's true.

In closing, I want to say how excited I am for the Noles to be going to Death Valley next weekend to take on the Clemson Tigers in a prime time game. Our defense may not be up to snuff, but we will play hard. And all true Nole fans out there will follow this team, believe in this team, and want this team to suceed. Success is only achieved when everyone involved is commited. I am calling out all Noles to stand behind this team. It will be worth it in the end. I know we are just 4-4, but it is imperative that we stand our ground and give it everything we have as fans.

I would also like to express my excitement to having 79 more Rocket's games. We play in Utah tomorrow and against the Lakers on Wednesday. That is a Portland-Oakland-Portland-Mormon-Laker start to the season. Thank you for throwing us a bone NBA. Before tipoff of our first game at Portland, I said to myself that a 1-4 start to this opening stretch would be okay. But, after watching our team play, I readjusted my thoughts. Why not go 4-1? Who am I to set expectations on this team? I am in no position to do such a thing. Why can't we go all the way and win another Championship with our current roster? Why can't Tracy come back and be the player we all know he can be? Why can't Yao make miracles happen and come back at the end of the year for the playoff push? It was completly irresponsible for me to make expectations. There is no reason why these things can't happen. This is the greatness that this team instills in people. It is the greatness of sport. I truely believe we are going to win it all. The Rocket's propaganda has worked on me.

On another note, Snoop Dogg's new album "Malice in Wonderland" hits shelves on December 8th. Alicia Key's new album hits shelves the following week on December 15th. I hope everyone had a great Halloween. I am truely blessed.

Peace and God Bless,

Dos

Look for a full write up of the wonderful comeback by the Noles sometime Sunday. I plan on playing golf in the morning and then getting a personal cooler of Sam Adams and Miller Genuine Draft and writing about the game. Great win last night Noles. I needed it.

Noles

I know I have been bad. I am sorry loyal followers of the Wagon. I take full responsibility in my displays of irresponsibility. Please forgive me. Tonight. We. Play. UNC. Tonight. We. Beat. UNC. Get it done men. Prove to everyone that we are on the right track.

Key match up: easily our offensive line against their front seven. They are really talented. North Carolina's offense is so crappy that our defense may have a shot to look decent. Problem is we are so banged up on that side of the ball....wait a second......that means we will be playing young players that might actually look like they know how to play football. This could actually help. Anyway, if our defense doesn't let TJ Yates look like Joe Montana and our offensive line can simply hold its own then I like our chances.

Prediction: Pain.......

Real Prediction: Noles- 31 Heels- 20

You heard it here first. Go Noles!

Now and Forever.

Commitment.

Never Breaks.

For Anyone.

Simply,
Dos

Bring on Troy

Irish Pie

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember How this weekend used to make me smile.
And I knew we always had a chance
With Lou pulling grass crouched in his stance
But, Davie and Ty put winning out of style.
And February made me shiver
No recruits did Ty deliver.
All of Kevin White’s missteps, I was scared of who he’d hire next.
I can’t remember if I cried When I read about Weis and all his pride,
But I have a feeling deep inside
This day ND will rise.

So bye-bye, You USC guys.
No more OJ no more AD,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”

Forget all about Reggie’s shove,
Jimmy’ s passes rained touchdowns from above,
As Golden kept running the “Go”
ND believes in rock n roll,
SC has Snoop but not any soul,
But our grass is deep and the field is real slow

Well, I know the media’s in love with Tim
`cant take Aspirin for his headache cause that’s a sin.
But when Saturday is through.
Other Heisman contenders can sing the blues.

He was a lonely teenage broncin buck
Arrived in a limo not a pickup truck,
But the world will know Jimmy does not suck
The day the Irish rise.

I started singin, Bye-bye, You USC guys.
No more Reggie or Matt Leinhart,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
Now for 10 years we have been owned
They mock “Charlie is fat”And Holtz sounds “shtoned”,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the Rocket was king and our D was mean,
Didn’t matter if we wore blue or green
We were always top 5 in the AP,
Oh, but while Lou was looking down,
The Monkster stole our football crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
Joe Moore had been spurned.
“Its Gruden!” provided a little spark,
But Lou still has to listen to Mark,
But its time for us to come out of the dark
This day the Irish rise.

So bye-bye, You USC guys.
Carson palmer is a Bengal,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”

Our talent is better Charlie looks a little svelter.
Since he doesn’t recruit from golf rain shelters,
All the despair is in the past.
No holding flags will fall on our grass.
They will recall we invented the forward pass,
Even with Mike Floyd on the sidelines in a cast.
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
Till the SC band played that awful tune.
Pete Carroll was set to dance,
Oh, but he never got the chance!
`cause his players tried to take the field;
Our marching band refused to yield.
All will recall what was revealed
The day the Irish rise

So bye-bye, You USC guys.
No more OJ no more AD,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”

The stadium was one rockin’ place,
A generation no longer disgraced
With no time on the clock ‘We win!”.
So come on: Tate was nimble, Tate was quick!
Don’t need Jumbotrons or Thundersticks
Glory has come back to South bend.

Oh, and as I watched Theisman on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
“ We are mad as hell!”
“Let’s break Pete Carroll’s spell.”
And as grotto flames climbed high into the night
Prayers were answered.
The world was right,
Sorry SC fans not tonight
Today the Irish rise

So bye-bye, You USC guys.
No more OJ no more AD,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”

I met a Song Girl who looked down and blue I laughed at her, puked on her shoes,
She just sighed and turned away.
I went down to the Hammes bookstore
Where I bought the same stuff Id bought before,
But the man there said today no one has to pay.
And in the streets: drunk fans screamed,
The Gay horse cried,
Mark may was steamed.
But not a word was spoken;
Until Officer Tim McCarthy was done jokin’.
And the three TDs we admired most:
Came from Jimmy to Golden on a post,
SC caught the last train for the coast
This day the Irish rise.

So bye-bye, You USC guys.
No more OJ no more AD,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”

So bye-bye, You USC guys.
No more OJ no more AD,
It’s our turn to fly
And Cash and Jvan will drink Ritas and cry
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
“Maybe Charlie can be the guy”
